Ameren Missouri: One of the Largest Coal Burning Producers of Electricity in US
Ameren Missouri is one of the largest coal burning producers of electricity in the United States. As coal is an inexpensive form of power production, electricity costs are relatively low in Missouri compared to other states. Yet burning coal is a leading producer of Carbon Dioxide gas emissions which can lead to global warming. As a result of environmental protests and energy mandates, Ameren Missouri is committed to reducing the number of coal-fired plants. Currently, Ameren Missouri is on track to retire all of its coal-fired plants by 2042, starting in 2022.
Ameren Missouri is also being mandated to upgrade exhaust systems using “scrubber” technology or dry-sorbent injection at some of the coal facilities. They are currently appealing the mandate. Should Ameren lose the appeal, it may decide to accelerate closures of those facilities rather than pay for expensive upgrades.
A spokesman for the utility also pointed to interim milestones including reducing carbon emissions 50% by 2030 and 85% by 2040, based on 2005 levels. The company said its goals are consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement signed in 2016.
Coal is an inexpensive means of electricity production. As carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced in the upcoming years, other more expensive forms of energy production will come into use. Electricity rate increases are obviously forthcoming in the near future. Solar generation will become an even more efficient, clean and less expensive way to power your home or business.
